S3A7 Outdoor Air Quality Monitor Tutorial - Summary

s3a7

#1

This tutorial uses the Renesas S3A7 board with the Renesas IoT Sandbox and the IoT Controller app to measure your air quality and notify you if your air quality is bad.

In this Outdoor Air Quality Monitor Tutorial, you will:

  • Send air quality data from the S3A7 board to the cloud
  • Use Medium One workflows to grade air quality and get location
  • Receive email, sms, or push notifications about bad air quality

Here’s what you need to get started:

  • Renesas S3A7 Fast Prototyping Kit
  • WiFi Internet Access

Estimated Time to Complete: 20-25 minutes

Prerequisites:

STEP 1: ACTIVATE KIT IN RENESAS IOT SANDBOX

Click here to activate the kit.
Since you already have a Renesas IoT Sandbox account from the Smart Chef Demo, a new project will be added to your account for this demo.

Once activation is completed, you will receive an email with your account credentials needed to provision the kit and access the cloud portal.

STEP 2: CONNECT THE S3A7 KIT TO THE CLOUD

Power up the board and touch the screen within 10 seconds of powering up the board to boot it up in provisioning mode. The board will become a WiFi Access Point.

Connect to the board from a computer via the WiFi network printed at the top of the screen.

Once connected, click on the link at the bottom of the activation email you received in step one. This autofills the following form with the configuration details specific to your project.

Alternatively, you can open the provisioning page served by the board by going to http://192.168.3.1 on your browser and manually enter the information yourself.

On the provisioning page, enter the WiFi information from your home or office network (the router which will be linked to the board). You will need to specify the router’s WiFi authentication mode. If you’re not sure, most Wifi routers use WPA2 so try that first.

If you did not use the hyperlink in the email, manually enter the Renesas IoT Sandbox API credentials emailed to you when you activated the kit in Step 2.

After entering the information, click Connect. This will automatically exit out of provision mode and you will see a “Provisioning complete” screen on the board.

Log into your Renesas Sandbox Account and power down the board.

STEP 3: CONNECT SENSORS

The sensors should be connected the same way they were in the Smart Chef demo.

If you need a refresher, here’s a link to the demo. The sensor instructions are under step 4.

STEP 4: DEACTIVATE WORKFLOWS

Many of the Smart Chef workflows are not needed for this project.
In your Renesas Sandbox Account, in the Workflow Studio (left sidebar), deactivate all of the workflows except:

  • IP and Location Monitoring
  • Air Quality Processing
  • Air Quality Sampling
  • Update Settings
  • Send Notifications
  • Update Display
